Severn Trent urges customers to save water as heatwave arrives
The warning comes as rising temperatures are expected to increase demand for water and put extra pressure on local supplies
Severn Trent is encouraging households across the Midlands to use water wisely as temperatures are set to climb during this week's heatwave.
The water company says hotter weather often leads to a sharp increase in demand, with more people watering gardens, filling paddling pools and using water outdoors.
While Severn Trent says customers can remain confident in their water supplies, it is asking people to take simple steps to reduce unnecessary water use and help protect rivers and reservoirs during the spell of dry weather.
Doug Clarke, Water Resources Lead at Severn Trent, said: "As temperatures rise, it's important that people stay hydrated and look after themselves in the heat.
"We're asking customers to think carefully about how they use water over the coming days.
"Small changes can make a big difference and help ensure there's enough water for everyone while also protecting the environment."
Among the company's top tips are using a watering can instead of a hosepipe, checking for leaking taps and toilets, and reusing water from paddling pools to water plants.
Households are also being encouraged to swap pressure washers for a bucket and sponge when washing cars, and to keep a jug of cold water in the fridge rather than running the tap until it cools down.
Doug added: "We've invested heavily in making our network more resilient and reducing leakage, but everyone has a role to play.
"By only using the water we need, we can help safeguard supplies and support the health of our rivers and natural environment during periods of hot weather."
The advice comes as temperatures will rise significantly across the region this week, bringing increased pressure on water resources and higher demand from households.
