A sentence given to an Afghan asylum seeker who raped a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton has been referred to the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme (ULS) for review.

Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, was jailed for fifteen years with an extra 12-months on license after being found guilty of rape, child abduction, two counts of sexual assault and taking an indecent video.

The 23-year-old, whose attacks in July 2025 sparked large-scale protests in Nuneaton, had admitted a second count of rape before his trial began.

The Attorney General's Office has said it is considering multiple requests to examine the sentence under the ULS scheme and has 28 days from sentencing to make a decision.

Mulakhil faced trial alongside Mohammad Kabir, also an asylum seeker from Afghanistan, who was acquitted of charges of intentional strangulation, attempted child abduction and committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Kabir, who was 24 according to court documents at the time of the trial but told jurors he was 22, was cleared after maintaining that he never touched the victim and had no sexual intentions towards her.

In a statement the ATG Office said: "We have received several requests for this sentence to be considered under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme.

"The Law Officers have 28 days from sentencing to carefully consider the case and make a decision. "
