Police in Warwickshire are urging households to take extra precautions to secure their homes ahead of a forecasted heatwave this week.

They say burglaries increase in the summer months because doors and windows are often left open, making homes easier targets for thieves. These are the steps they shared to help protect properties:

  • Close and lock all windows and doors before going to bed or leaving your home—even for a short time.
  • Use window restrictors that allow ventilation without allowing full access.
  • Install motion-activated lights or smart lighting around entry points to deter intruders.
  • CCTV or video doorbells can act as both deterrents and valuable evidence.
  • Check garden gates and sheds—ensure they are locked and tools are out of sight as these can be used to gain access to your home.
  • Be a good neighbour. If you see anything suspicious, report it to us immediately.
  • Find out about property marking schemes such as Smartwater. If an item is marked it will be much harder for a thief to sell on. Also, if recovered, stolen items can then be returned to their rightful owner.
