New food waste collections roll out across Coventry
From Monday 7 September, Coventry households will be asked to separate their food waste from their usual rubbish as weekly collections begin
Coventry households are being asked to make a small change to the way they dispose of food waste, as new weekly collections get underway across the city.
From Monday, September 7, residents will be able to put food scraps into new caddies rather than their usual household rubbish bins.
The new food waste bins have been delivered to homes across Coventry since June, with most households receiving a 23-litre lockable outdoor caddy.
People living in flats and high-rise buildings will instead use smaller kitchen caddies, which can be emptied into shared communal bins.
Coventry East MP Mary Creagh has welcomed the introduction, after introducing the policy during her time as Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:
MP Creagh said: "27% of our black bin bags are food waste. Separating it means lower carbon emissions, more recycling, and benefits local farmers and our environment.
"I want to thank Coventry City Council for their work on Simpler Recycling and I encourage everyone to do their bit to clean up our city."
The scheme is designed to make better use of food waste, with collected scraps being processed into fertiliser for local farms and used to generate renewable energy rather than being sent for incineration.
Housholds should put their food waste caddy out alongside their normal rubbish on their usual collection day.
