New ADHD and autism policy announced in Coventry and Warwickshire

Referrals reopened for all ages under updated NHS framework

NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board has announced a new ADHD and autism policy that reopens referral routes for patients of all ages.

The policy replaces a temporary emergency measure introduced in May 2025, which had paused ADHD referrals for people aged 25 and over.

Under the new approach, patients of any age can now be considered for an ADHD assessment, with referral decisions based on clinical need and functional impact.

People who believe they may have ADHD or autism are being advised to contact their GP to arrange an appointment.

Alongside the reopening of referrals, the policy introduces a new quality-based framework for providers.

All NHS-funded services, including Right to Choose providers, will be required to meet clear standards on quality, safety, governance and follow-up, in line with NICE guidelines.

The ICB says the aim is to improve confidence in the consistency and quality of assessments, as well as overall patient support."

Where appropriate, clinicians referring patients for both ADHD and autism assessments will now be expected to arrange a combined assessment.

This is intended to reduce the number of appointments needed, avoid delays, and give a fuller understanding of a patient’s neurodevelopmental needs.

Waiting times for assessments remain significant, with adult ADHD waits in the NHS typically between three and six years, and children waiting five to ten years.

Autism assessments also involve long delays, with children and young people waiting around two years on average and adults slightly longer.

The ICB says it recognises waiting times are too long and is working with partners to address the issue, alongside the introduction of the new policy and standards. It adds that long waits are being experienced nationally.
