Leamington Spa's art gallery and museum is to remain shut due to "unforeseen circumstances" as the building undergoes major repairs to its roof.

Building works have been ongoing since March on the Royal Pump Rooms where the museum is located in order to preserve its historic character.

The works include a complete restoration of the roof, which had not been repaired for decades - requiring a total rehash of the roof itself.

Last month, a crane had been installed in order to begin removing certain components of the roof such as "old and redundant plant equipment" as well as air ventilation.

However, in an update posted on social media on Tuesday (June 3rd), the gallery confirmed it would need to be temporarily closed while complexities of the roof's removal were worked out.

"Recent adverse weather has impacted the ongoing roof repair works," Warwickshire District Council said.

"As a precautionary measure, we have closed the gallery to safeguard the artworks and ensure the safety of our visitors and staff."

They added that as a result of the incident, the planned opening of their exhibition looking at female artists has had to be postponed.

A spokesperson for the council said a further update would be provided on Wednesday (June 4th).
