The popular Game Of Thrones saga by American writer George RR Martin is set for a theatrical adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
The play, titled Game Of Thrones: The Mad King, is scheduled to debut in Stratford-upon-Avon this summer.
It will be adapted for the stage by playwright Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke.
Set a decade before the original novels, the story will open following a lengthy winter, unfolding at a "lavish banquet on the eve of a jousting tournament."
The plot revolves around a treasonous challenge to the rule of the Mad King, amidst concerns from his inner circle regarding his merciless leadership.
George RR Martin expressed surprise and excitement about the adaptation, stating that when he first wrote Game Of Thrones, he never envisioned it beyond the realm of books.
Martin said: "For my work to now be adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement."
He further cited the RSC as the "obvious choice" to stage a Game Of Thrones story and encouraged fans, as well as newcomers to his work, to experience this production in a theatre.
The RSC confirmed that priority tickets will be available starting from 14th April, with public booking opening later in the month.
Additional details about the adaptation are yet to be disclosed.
