Warwickshire Police have praised the bravery shown by a victim of domestic abuse after her ex-partner was jailed for more than three years.

The couple was holiday in Egypt in February when Guillaume Buckingham, 31, of Mellowship Road, Coventry launched the attack following an argument.

He headbutted the victim repeatedly until she was unconscious and continued the attack when she came round.

The victim, reported the attack to police when they returned to the country and Buckingham was arrested.

Appearing at Warwick Crown Court this week, Buckingham, 31, was jailed for three years and nine months after pleading guilty to wounding with intent.

He was also given a seven-year restraining order banning him from contacting or approaching the victim.

investigation officer DC Lauren O’Shea said: “There were times when she wanted to drop the prosecution.

“But she wanted to make sure he couldn’t harm other women. She also felt she owed it to herself to make sure he didn’t get away with the most horrific violence he subjected her to.

“The victim has shown incredible bravery. For victims of domestic abuse, going through the legal process can be daunting but she has shown great resilience, and we have made sure she received the right support throughout.

“The case also shows that borders are not a barrier to bringing domestic abusers to justice. Despite this offence happening in Egypt, we were able to gather evidence with support from the Egyptian authorities and put Buckingham before the court.

“While the outcome at court will never take away from what happened, I hope the victim can find some closure and rebuild her life."
