Direct trains between Stratford-upon-Avon and London to return
A twice-daily Chiltern Railways service will resume from December
Direct train services between Stratford-upon-Avon and London are set to return in December 2026, marking the reinstatement of a route that has been absent for several years.
Chiltern Railways has confirmed it will introduce two direct services each day between the historic market town and the capital.
The timetable has been designed to coincide with matinee performances at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, making it easier for visitors to travel to Stratford-upon-Avon for day trips and theatre visits.
The return of the direct service is expected to improve transport links for both residents and tourists, while supporting the town's visitor economy and cultural attractions.
The announcement follows a campaign calling for the reinstatement of the route, including efforts by Stratford-on-Avon MP Manuela Perteghella, who has been lobbying for the service to return since her election in 2024.
Manuela Perteghella MP said: "I am chuffed to confirm that direct trains to London will be returning to and leaving from Stratford=upon-Avon from 14 December 2026. To start, there will be two services per day that work around the matinee schedule in theatres on weekdays.
“This is a great win for local businesses such as shops, cafes and restaurants and our theatres, and it offers more choice to local people who want to visit the capital.
“It’s also a great win for constituents who want to be able to move effortlessly between the constituency and the capital.
MP Perteghella said she wants to expand the service in the future:“Commuters may be able to catch one direct train during weekdays, but we need more services to make this a reality for people wishing to commute for work.
“The welcome return of direct trains to London is a milestone in my campaign, but I want to see more services for my constituents. I will continue to campaign to get a wider range of train services from Stratford-on-Avon to Birmingham, London, Oxford and beyond.”
The twice-daily direct trains are scheduled to begin operating on 14 December 2026.
