Coventry City Council has set its budget for the 2026/27 financial year, marking the first opportunity in 15 years to make substantial investments in local services following a favourable government settlement.

The budget unveiling has been accompanied by a decision to increase council tax by 3.9%, a move necessary to support the council’s growing expenditure needs.

This increase, which includes a 2.9% rise in the core council tax and a 1% Adult Social Care Precept, ensures the rise remains under the government-mandated threshold of 5% to avoid a public referendum.

Coventry residents were consulted on where the budget’s investments should be allocated, and their input has guided the council’s focus on key areas for improvement.

The areas that will benefit from these investments include measures to tackle anti-social behaviour, repairs to roads and pavements, expanded employment and training opportunities for young people, improved road safety measures, and enhanced street cleaning.

These priorities are seen as vital to enhancing public welfare and improving the quality of life for Coventry’s residents.

The increase means that the Band D council tax level for the city, including special parish precepts, has risen by £82.98 from the previous year’s level.

The council has also finalised the figures related to the Police and Crime Commissioner and Fire and Rescue Authority precepts.

As per statutory requirements, the council has calculated its latest council tax, which must cover expenditure beyond revenue from business rates, grants, fees, and charges.

Employing resolutions from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, the council maintains its commitment to adherence with legal duties in tax setting.

The average council tax bill in Coventry is £1,603.11, reflecting the city’s property mix heavily weighted towards Bands A to C.

Through careful budget planning, Coventry City Council aims to bolster its financial sustainability, aligning with the One Coventry Plan to ensure continued service provision and address future financial challenges.
