Youth band in Camborne suffers break-in over bank holiday weekend
Community rallies to help Camborne Brass recover from the incident
Camborne Youth Brass Band's rehearsal space in Tuckingmill, Cornwall, was hit by a break-in during the bank holiday weekend, leading to significant disruptions for the band and its community.
The break-in, which resulted in extensive damage, has rallied local support in a commendable effort to assist recovery.
The musical director of Camborne Youth Brass Band was informed about the incident around 18:00 BST on Saturday by the police. Devon and Cornwall Police reported that entry to the building was "forced" and damage was "considerable" to both the structure and its contents, impacting crucial musical equipment.
Three 12-year-old girls and two 12-year-old boys were detained at the scene by police, who confirmed that "enquiries into the matter are ongoing."
Despite the setback, the community has shown immense support. Within 24 hours, Camborne Brass successfully raised £10,000 on Crowdfunder to help the band cover the costs associated with the break-in. The funds will be used to support repairs and improvements needed for the bandroom.
Camborne Brass shared their success via Facebook, stating: “WE DID IT! £10,000 RAISED IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS! We honestly cannot believe the incredible support we have received!”
The crowdfunding initiative still has 83 days remaining, and additional donations are welcomed. These contributions are aimed at not only repairing the bandroom but also strengthening security to protect the space further.
Expressing gratitude, they added: “The incredible response from our community, friends, family, fellow bands and supporters has completely blown us away. But the campaign isn’t over!”
Looking to the future, Camborne Brass has organised a charity concert to further galvanise community support. Set for 4th October 2026, the event will be held at The Star Inn, Vogue, St Day, starting at 3 PM. Tickets, priced at £5 per person, promise a lively afternoon of music featuring Camborne Brass and special guest performers.
Highlighting the significance of the collective effort, Camborne Brass commented: “Your Band. Your Community. Your Support. Together, we can get our bandroom back — so the Band can play on.”
