A 'special' new space opens this month in Helston - which promises to be the 'ultimate' place for young people who live in South Kerrier.

That place is 'The Basement, which hosts a simple six-word motto: 'Your Space. Your Voice. Your Adventure'.

After canvassing across the region and listening to hundreds of young people in Helston and the Lizard Peninsular, those behind the new project say they're created 'something extraordinary' with the new space.

Jonathan Bray, who is the man behind the scheme, said: "It's such an exciting space. It feels like it's a space that people would really want to come into and it's just great to know that it's going to work as what it's been planned to be.

"We're here for the long term. It's all kitted out with plenty of stuff, so we've got a full music rig, we've got a lighting rig as well. Coming in January, we should have a small recording studio as well and then hopefully we'll start building things that the young people want around the outside of that."

It's got the capacity to hold 200 people, and has a number of upcoming events to entice more through the doors, amid their mission to create a space that is curated for the needs of 13 to 18-year-olds.

Just this week, there's a drop-in 'surfskate' session, Friday film club, yoga - and even a roller disco.

Their preview event, held back on October 15, showcased just what the place is about: bringing something fresh for local teenagers.

Teen Rock & Pop Band M2 and Josh Taylor kicked it off, with those who attended bringing 'energy, enthusiasm and support', which organisers said made the whole thing 'truly special'.

"It was so exciting to see the space come to life, so we had nearly 400 kids over the evening", added Mr Bray.

"M2 are our local youth band that were playing to their peers which really fits with our values.

"It was brilliant to see the space really animated."

The events will be taking place until November 1st.
