A vehicle fire is causing disruption for drivers on the A30 near Launceston with lots of smoke in the area.

The eastbound carriageway near Pennygillam has now reopened but the westbound carriageway remains closed.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "A large vehicle fire on the A30 near Pennygillam, Launceston, is sending large amounts of smoke into the surrounding area."

Cornwall Council have urged people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.

Students were also sent home early from Launceston College after smoke covered about "two thirds" of the school site.

In a post on Facebook Launceston College said: "Following the incident involving a vehicle on the A30, there is a significant amount of smoke in the area surrounding the school.

We would like to reassure everyone that all students and staff are safe and secure. We are working closely with the fire service and have moved our school community inside to buildings furthest away from the road.

As the smoke has spread, we now need to avoid, where possible, approximately two thirds of the school site.

"We are therefore asking parents and carers to collect their child or children as soon as they are able to."
