There's been a big celebration at Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Hayle, as Spneb, the dignified Humboldt penguin, glides into her 38th birthday on 16th April 2026.

On her milestone day, Keeper Archie has crafted an exquisite ice cake sprinkled with Cornish sardines and sprats, embellished with blue food dye to evoke a chic nautical flair. Keeper Emma presented this edible artwork to the crowd's delight, with onlookers marvelling at one of the oldest living Humboldt penguins worldwide according to zoo records.

Keeper Becky Waite shares that Spneb continues to thrive, gracefully overseeing the younger penguins like a feathery guardian of her colony.

Her name, as unique as her story, is inspired by the medications that helped her triumph over Aspergillosis back in 2007, displaying not just resilience but a playful penchant for distinctiveness.

Along with her companion, Prince, known for his lively spirit, Spneb is a testament to the charm and intelligence of Humboldt penguins.

From their origins in Chile and Peru, these penguins boast natural adaptive abilities, including a clever facial patch that regulates their temperature.

Yet, they face the risk of extinction in the wild due to pollution and human interference, highlighting the importance of these captivating creatures.
