Penzance has been named as one of the best places to live in Britain, according to a new survey.

The Cornish seaside town ranked highly on a Guardian poll, which looked at a variety of different metrics to make its decisions.

Among these that were considered by the paper included driving times to local amenities and healthcare, as well as broadband speeds and leisure activities in the area.

According to the survey, Penzance had a number of various elements that made it one of the best places to live in Britain, including "two-and-a-half-mile seafront promenade and large harbour".

The city's terraces, also filled with independent shops and cafes helped to boost its profile, alongside the dozens of beaches within a stonesthrow of the town.

They added: "Although a tourist hub, the town is not solely geared up for out-of-towners, it still has all key services for its 20,000 permanent residents – major supermarkets, a hospital, library, a college.

And despite being at the end of the line, Penzance is fairly well connected, with non-stop services to Plymouth, Bristol and London. The bus station connects to surrounding towns and villages. Truro and Falmouth are a 55- and 60-minute drive respectively."

Other places in the South West were also featured on the list, including Exeter in Devon and Devizes in Wiltshire.
