Penzance Council awards over £17,000 to local initiatives, boosting community projects
Support for Montol Festival, Trelya, and Cornish Maritime Trust enhances local culture and wellbeing
Penzance Council has announced over £17,000 in grant funding to support three local community organizations, ensuring continued growth and development in the region.
The renowned Montol Festival, a mid-winter celebration steeped in Cornish folklore, receives £7,470 to enhance its cultural programming, including parades and workshops in traditional crafts, mask-making, and music. This funding helps bolster safety measures and operational frameworks to ensure accessibility and community enjoyment.
Trelya’s Nurture & Nourish Penzance project has been allocated £5,000, supporting year-long efforts to tackle food insecurity, poverty, and social isolation. Through healthy eating activities and family support, Trelya strives to empower families with practical nutrition education and reinforce positive lifelong habits.
Additionally, the Cornish Maritime Trust has secured £4,982.44 to develop the Fisherman’s Rest into a maritime community education hub. This initiative aims to preserve maritime heritage, promote knowledge exchange, and reduce isolation while attracting visitors to Newlyn’s Old Harbour.
Penzance Council’s funding highlights its commitment to bolstering community engagement, culture, and wellbeing, with projects catering to diverse interests and addressing societal challenges.
Co-Executive Director of Trelya, Crin Whelan, emphasized the impact of the grant on enhancing health education and providing families the tools to thrive, while Cornish Maritime Trust’s Rob McDowell praised the funding for nurturing maritime heritage.
