Passengers using Penryn station set to save thousands with rail fare freeze
Labour MP Jayne Kirkham says the move will help families with the cost of living
A local Labour MP says passengers travelling through Penryn station are set to benefit from substantial cost-of-living boost following the government’s first rail fare freeze in three decades.
An analysis of the station’s usage data reveals that the freeze will save local rail users a total of £42,318 this year.
According to figures, around 284,974 passengers either began or ended their journeys at Penryn station in the year to March 2025.
An estimated 45%of these are regulated and therefore subject to Labour’s fare freeze.
An average ticket costs ÂŁ6.88.
Historically, fares rise each July with inflation figures, which in 2025 was measured at 4.8%.
Therefore, without the freeze, passengers could have seen fares increase by 33p per ticket.
Publishing the figures Penryn’s Labour MP Jayne Kirkham highlighted the significance of the freeze for families and commuters.
“This Labour Government is determined to help families with the cost of living.
"Rail fares are frozen for the first time in a generation, helping people afford journeys to school, college and work.
“We all want to see change as fast as possible, and this year that change will become clearer every day - in your weekly shop, monthly bills, and wages,” Kirkham said.
