The Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team, alongside multiple agencies including Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, Devon & Cornwall Police, Padstow Lifeboat, and the Newquay Coastguard Rescue Helicopter, conducted searches at Towan Beach after reports suggested a person might be in the water.

The operation began on the evening of 16th February after coastguard officers received the report at around 5pm.

The search encompassed both shoreline and offshore areas, but despite extensive efforts, no individuals in distress were located.

While this operation was underway, the team received another call reporting people stranded by the tide in the Gannel.

Due to their commitment at Towan Beach, St Agnes Coastguard Search and Rescue Team responded to the Gannel report, which was later identified as a false alarm with good intentions.

Early on the morning of 17th February, the Newquay Coastguard Team along with HM Coastguard Padstow were tasked with assisting South Western Ambulance Service and police at a separate incident at Barrowfields.

This incident was resolved shortly after their arrival, leading to the stand down of all assets.

HM Coastguard advises if you see someone in difficulty along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

“HM Coastguard responded to reports of a person possibly in difficulty in the water off Towan Beach yesterday, 16 February,” HM Coastguard said.

“First informed at around 5pm, Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team, lifeboats from Newquay and Padstow RNLI and a coastguard helicopter were sent to conduct searches of the area."

“Following extensive shoreline and offshore searches, the search was stood down with no one found to be in distress.”
