MPs warning of hidden deprivation in Cornwall call for targeted support
Leaders say challenges for residents are masked by Cornwall's scenic appeal
During a Westminster Hall debate on Coastal Communities: Isolation and Hidden Deprivation, Cornwall's Labour MPs highlighted how Cornwall's picturesque environment often conceals deep-rooted challenges, such as hidden poverty and inadequate public services.
Representatives Jayne Kirkham, Perran Moon, and Anna Gelderd said the barriers faced by residents in rural and coastal communities, include expensive housing, unreliable transport, and limited healthcare access, and contribute to local deprivation.
Despite the county's popularity among tourists, many locals struggle as the metrics used for funding overlook rural hardships, misrepresenting the reality of Cornwall's economically vulnerable areas.
Research from Plymouth Marjon University describes this as "pretty poverty," illustrating how deprivation is masked by the region's attractive landscape, affluence pockets, and second homes.
Cornwall was once identified by the EU as one of the poorest regions in Western Europe, and with current Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), it risks missing out on vital government support.
Jayne Kirkham emphasized the necessity of addressing rural deprivation with policymaking that accounts for specific needs distinct from urban areas. She said wants to ensure young residents access opportunities akin to those in urban settings.
Anna Gelderd and Perran Moon echoed similar calls, advocating for affordable housing, secure jobs, and better transport systems to support economic growth and prevent young people from being pushed out of their communities.
The MPs say they are committed to working alongside the Labour government to leverage policies like the Kernow Industrial Growth Fund and initiatives in public services and transport to uplift Cornwall's socio-economic landscape.
