MPs praise modernisation as TamarTag applications go digital
The new online application system replaces outdated processes
Drivers in Plymouth and Cornwall can now apply for their TamarTag online as part of a modernisation effort praised by local MPs, Luke Pollard and Anna Gelderd.
The new online application system replaces outdated processes, a move long advocated by both MPs, who have been vocal about the need for cheaper tolls and modern tech for local drivers.
The call for upgrading the system intensified last December following a proposal to increase the administration fee for TamarTag users, which triggered widespread community backlash.
Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said, “Getting your TamarTag is finally becoming easier and not before time. Last December, many people were rightly frustrated and concerned when the Joint Committee proposed increasing the administration fee for having a TamarTag. Anna Gelderd MP and I were clear from the outset that this was not acceptable. We have consistently argued for cheaper tolls for local people, and a key part of that is bringing the system up to date, replacing outdated processes with modern, accessible technology."
Pollard emphasised his hope that cheaper tolls will be a focus at the next Joint Committee meeting on 26th June 2026. He has been firm in his representations to both the Joint Chairs and the management of Tamar Crossings.
Anna Gelderd, MP for South East Cornwall, shared similar sentiments. “It’s great to see TamarTag applications now available fully online, saving people time and making it easier to access essential services across the Tamar. Improvements like this show how the crossings can better work for local people."
The Joint Committee meeting will review feedback from the public consultation regarding proposed administration fee increases. Both MPs are urging the committee to prioritise the financial interests of local commuters.
