Mike's Trust raises awareness on knife crime three years after tragedy
Family honours Michael Riddiough-Allen by educating youth on dangers
As the third anniversary of Michael Riddiough-Allen’s tragic death approaches, his family continues to dedicate themselves to educating young people about the dangers of knife crime through Mike's Trust, a charity established in his memory.
Michael was fatally stabbed outside a Bodmin nightclub on 30th April 2023, and recognising a lack of support for victims in the South West, his family founded the charity to address this gap.
Mike's sister, Becky Dustan, actively contributes to the charity's efforts, striving to make conversations about knife crime more open and educating youth on its risks and consequences:
"We make this an open conversation where young people can feel they can speak to people they trust."
Becky emphasises the importance of dispelling myths surrounding knife carrying, urging young people to feel empowered to make responsible choices and report any knowledge of weapons to trusted individuals.
Becky said: "The truth is, you are at a greater risk of getting hurt if you are carrying a knife."
One of the initiatives Mike’s Trust engages in includes educational talks at schools, colleges, and youth groups, promoting awareness and prevention of knife crime.
Mike’s Motor Mania, an annual free family event, will be held again in his memory on 26th July at Spitfire Park in Perranporth.
Becky recalls Michael's "harrowing" death, urging for change through education and discussion. She supports knife crime prevention, recognising that even in great pain, there can be light and positivity.
The charity hopes to expand its outreach, aiming to employ additional personnel to reach more schools and communities with life-saving discussions.
