The town of Helston is buzzing with energy as residents and visitors join together to commemorate Flora Day, a cherished and historic Cornish tradition.

Held annually on 8th May, this ancient spring festival symbolises the end of winter and the arrival of new vitality, with trees and flowers blossoming throughout the town.

Homes and shops are decorated with greenery and floral arrangements, reflecting the spirit of renewal that defines Flora Day.

Commencing at seven in the morning, the beat of the big bass drum sets the tone for festivities, as couples dance through the streets, visiting select homes and shops to drive out the darkness of winter and welcome the light of spring.

Nick Wills from Helston Flora Day Association highlights the importance of generational participation, ensuring children are involved in celebrating this significant cultural event:

"It's the fact that they want to do it and they're not pressured in to doing it, it's a cultural element of the town. Young involvement is the life source of keeping this tradition going and if you get people who buy into it at a young age, then the tradition is strong and the future is bright."

Flora Day unites the entire town with dancing, music, and vibrant street celebrations, representing one of Cornwall’s most colourful traditions.

As Helston gathers to embrace spring's arrival, the festival stands as a testament to community spirit and heritage.
