A statue celebrating the Mermaid of Zennor legend was unveiled at St Ives station this week.

It is part of Great Western Railway's campaign encouraging families to explore the landscapes behind the region's myths and legends during English Tourism Week, which runs from 13th to 22nd March.

GWR's newly updated book, The Line to Legend Land, shares 11 stories from across the South West and Wales, including an introduction and a new tale from author Sir Michael Morpurgo.

Jeni Woolcock, collections manager at the Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery, helped present the new statue.

Jeni said: “Cornwall's legends, including the Mermaid of Zennor, are linked inseparably with the landscape we know and love. Such fireside stories have been passed down through the generations and form part of Cornwall’s strong regional identity – we explore all of this in the brand-new exhibition, Cornish Myths & Legends, which opens on 31st March."

Dan Panes, GWR Head of External Communications, expressed excitement about the campaign.

Dan Panes said: “The Mermaid of Zennor is just one of so many captivating stories across the region we serve, and by taking these statues out to some of our most popular destinations, we’re aiming to inspire families to venture out on the train and discover the legends for themselves.”

The statue at St Ives will be joined by Excalibur at Castle Cary, and the Giants of Avon Gorge at Bristol Temple Meads.

The Faeries of Pennard Castle at Swansea and the Red Dragon at Cardiff Central will be added tomorrow.

GWR has donated copies of The Line to Legend Land to 500 primary schools across its network to preserve these stories for future generations.

The campaign also supports Farms for City Children, a charity begun by Sir Michael Morpurgo, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
