Surgery services at West Cornwall Hospital sees upgrade in CQC rating
Hospital achieves 'Good' in all assessed areas
West Cornwall Hospital has seen a significant improvement in its surgery services, achieving a 'Good' rating across all areas in the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessment.
The hospital, part of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, improved from its previous 'Requires Improvement' status following a thorough inspection in March 2026.
The assessment covered five key standards: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led, with the hospital earning a 'Good' rating for each domain.

Inspectors noted the effective systems and processes in place to ensure safe and high-quality care.
They praised the kindness, compassion, and professionalism of the staff, receiving positive feedback from patients regarding their treatment.
Kim O'Keeffe, Acting Chief Executive Officer, expressed satisfaction with the recognition from the CQC.
"We’re delighted the CQC has recognised the improvements made within our surgery services at West Cornwall Hospital," she said.
"While there is always more for us to do, we welcome the feedback on areas where we can continue to improve. This report reflects the commitment, integrity, and compassion our colleagues show every day for patients, families, and one another."
Patient and Staff Feedback
The CQC report also highlighted a positive culture of safety and learning, effective medicines management, strong infection prevention and control standards, and good governance arrangements.
Patients spoke highly of the care they received, describing staff as kind, professional, and attentive.
Bernadette George, Acting Chief Nursing Officer, emphasised the importance of compassionate, person-centred care, stating that it was pleasing to see patients feel involved and supported.
"This report recognises the dedication of our teams across West Cornwall Hospital and the difference they make every day through safe, compassionate, and high-quality care," George said.
West Cornwall Hospital's overall rating remains 'Good', reflecting their ongoing efforts to provide excellent care.
