It's as we mark National Empty Homes Week

National Empty Homes Week commences today (9th March), highlighting initiatives in Cornwall aimed at reducing the number of homes remaining unfurnished and unoccupied for over a year, which currently stands at around 2,500.

The council has launched various schemes assisting homeowners to restore their properties and alleviate the financial burden caused by long-term vacancy, including increased council tax premiums, insurance, and maintenance costs.

The Empty Home Loan scheme, introduced in October, offers property owners access to loans for renovation and restoration projects, including options for individuals struggling to secure regular bank loans.

Additionally, Cornwall Council's Private Sector Leasing Scheme allows homeowners to lease their properties to the council, providing support to local families in need and guaranteeing rent for the lease duration. Financial assistance is available to aid the transition of homes into this scheme.

For those interested in renting their properties without managing them, the council offers a Private Letting Service that handles landlord responsibilities.

Owners seeking further guidance are encouraged to contact Cornwall Council's Empty Homes Team for advice.

Peter La Broy, Cornwall Council cabinet member for housing, emphasised the urgency to utilise these homes, citing their necessity amid rising temporary accommodation figures and social housing registration:

"In my role I meet many people in need of a home to call their own. It’s clear that these homes are very much needed. At a time when we are seeing large numbers of people living in temporary accommodation and on our social housing register, empty homes are a wasted resource. They also have a wider impact on our communities, attracting vandalism and anti-social behaviour. If you are the owner of a property which has been empty on long-term basis, I believe you have a responsibility to bring your home back in to use – our schemes are there to remove some of the barriers."
