Cornwall Council is appealing for more people to open their homes to teenagers leaving the care system, offering them the chance to develop independence and confidence through the Supported Lodgings Scheme.

The scheme invites residents and families with a spare room to host young people aged 16 to 19 who are leaving care. Hosts provide practical and emotional support, helping these teenagers as they transition to independent living.

In return, hosts receive payment for rent and a contribution towards utility bills, as well as training and ongoing support from the council.

The appeal comes during National Care Leavers Month, which celebrates Cornwall’s care leavers and the individuals who support them. Currently, 345 teenagers aged 16 to 19 are in the care system in Cornwall.

Councillor Hilary Frank, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Schools at Cornwall Council, emphasised the importance of the role.

“Being a Supported Lodgings host is a key role. You’re helping young people leaving care take those big steps towards becoming independent, confident adults. Yes, it can be challenging at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding," Councillor Frank said.

“At Cornwall Council, we stand beside our hosts with training and ongoing support, because helping a young person build their future is something we do together. So, if you think you could offer a safe, supportive space to help a young person grow and thrive, we’d love to hear from you.”

The Supported Lodgings Scheme offers hosts:

  • Support and Guidance: Practical advice and emotional assistance to help young people on their journey to independence.
  • A Safe Space: Ensuring a welcoming and stable environment for young people to feel secure.
  • Encouragement and Mentorship: Helping to build confidence and life skills.
  • Collaboration with Professionals: Working alongside Social Workers, Personal Advisors, and support workers to meet the teenager's needs.
  • Training and Development: Comprehensive training and support prepare hosts to fulfil their role effectively.
