The RNLI has launched a new initiative to encourage more female lifeguards to join the organisation - and keep them there - after holding its first ever all-female training camp in Newquay.

The programme has been set over five years and aims to retain women in lifeguarding roles while expanding their career opportunities within the RNLI.

"We've been in the RNLI for over a decade and we really want to encourage and support these female lifeguards and try - and ensure that we retain them as well," said Amy, a lifeguard supervisor involved in the initiative.

"We've managed to make a career out of it, so we would also like to encourage other females to do so as well."

"We're hoping that it's going to encourage more female lifeguards to join"

This year, the initiative was held in the Southwest, and Amy said she hopes to see it grow with new facilitators and participants joining in the coming years.

"We're hoping for this to be a part of a five year plan," she added.

"We just wanting to see this grow bigger and bigger.

"We're hoping that it's going to encourage more female lifeguards to join, to stay within the RNLI and also find new career paths."
