A book has been returned to a library in Cornwall more than four decades after it was first borrowed.

Music Notation, by Gardner Read, was loaned out from Penzance Library and was due back on 25th March 1980 according to its record card.

It was eventually handed into St Ives Library in November 2025 - 45 years late.

The book was one of several returned during Cornwall Libraries' November Book Amnesty, which encouraged borrowers to return books they had forgotten to bring back over the years.

Cornwall Council say the books will once again re-join Cornwall Libraries stock so they can be enjoyed by other library users.

Councillor Sarah Preece, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries and Culture at Cornwall Council, said: “It’s wonderful that books like this one have been returned to the library service for other people to enjoy.

“If you have forgotten to return books, whether it’s been months, years or decades, we’ll be glad to have them back, and to see you as well.

“Our libraries are welcoming, safe spaces. If you have overdue books, you don’t need to be worried or feel embarrassed. There won’t be any fines, or fuss - we just ask that you return your books when you can.”

Cornwall Libraries are fine-free throughout the year and provide free library membership for people in the county.

The service offers thousands of books as well as digital resources like free eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines, and eNewspapers.

Events and activities are also regularly held.
