A burglar has been jailed after being caught stealing tools worth thousands of pounds from a Halfords branch in Peterborough.

Nadeem Atwell, 37, broke into the shop located on Mallory Road, Boongate, in the early hours of 21st December, activating an alarm in the process.

Atwell and an accomplice triggered the alarm, leading to police attendance at the scene.

While Atwell ran from officers, the other man was arrested.

Despite being cornered, Atwell managed to escape after a struggle, but he was quickly identified from CCTV footage and arrested the following day.

The investigation revealed that 20 socket sets with a retail value of £8,800 had been stolen during the burglary.

Additionally, the court heard that three days prior to the incident at Halfords, Atwell visited the BP garage on Bretton Way where he stole three bottles of wine.

Atwell, of East Road, Cambridge, denied charges of burglary, possessing a firearm with intent, and administering a noxious thing.

However, he was found guilty at Cambridge Crown Court in March.

He admitted an additional count of theft from the shop.

On 14th May, Atwell was sentenced to three years behind bars at the same court.

PC Levi Peynado said:

“Atwell thought he had escaped justice by getting away from officers at the scene, but he was swiftly identified and apprehended."

“I’m pleased he has now appeared in court and been jailed for his crimes.”
