Man sentenced to six years in prison for New Year's Eve stabbing in Peterborough
Argument over parking escalated to violent attack
A 24-year-old man has been jailed for six years following a stabbing during a parking dispute on New Year's Eve in Peterborough.
Jameel Ali was involved in the altercation at approximately 4 pm on 31st December 2023 in Windmill Street.
The dispute began when the victim asked Ali to move his car forward to allow another vehicle to park.
The argument escalated when Ali headbutted the victim and stabbed him in the neck with a knife, as described by the victim.
Ali fled the scene immediately after the attack, prompting a police response.
Officers arrived to find the victim, a man in his 30s, on the ground with a stab wound to the neck.
He received initial treatment at Peterborough City Hospital and was later transferred to Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge for further assessment.
Ali's vehicle was identified, leading to his arrest two days later.
Despite denying the charge of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent, Ali was found guilty in January following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court.
His sentencing took place at the same court on 15th May.
Detective Constable Lloyd Davis commented on the incident, saying: “This incident could have been much, much, worse. It is only luck that the victim was not more seriously injured.”
DC Davis expressed satisfaction that Ali was apprehended and given a custodial sentence, adding: “I’m pleased Ali was identified, apprehended and has now received a significant custodial sentence for his actions. I also hope the conclusion of the court proceedings will enable the victim to put this experience behind him.”
