A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for sexually assaulting a young girl.

Robert Clark, from Fairfields Crescent in St Ives, was convicted of two counts of sexual activity with a child under the age of 13.

The offences took place over a 12-month period between summer 2020 and 2021.

The abuse was revealed when the victim confided in her mother, who then contacted the police.

Clark was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, 8th May.

In addition to his jail sentence, Clark has been given a sexual harm prevention order, as well as indefinite restraining and sex offenders’ register orders.

Detective Sergeant Mark Williamson, who led the investigation, commended the victim and her family for their courage during the legal proceedings.

Williamson said: “Clark’s abuse of the young victim was beyond sickening.

"I would like to praise the victim and her family for the bravery and composure they have shown throughout this whole ordeal.

"I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault to please come forward and report it to us, you will be taken seriously and we will investigate thoroughly.”
