Former PM spokesman becomes chair of Cambridge United
Godric Smith is a lifelong fan of the U's
A lifelong Cambridge United fan who was also a spokesman for the Prime Minister has become chair of the club.
Godric Smith joined the club Board in 2018 and has been a trustee of the Cambridge United Foundation since 2024, including the last 18 months as chair.
He will take over from Shaun Grady, who will remain a club director.
"It is a genuine honour to be asked to be chair of Cambridge United, the club I have supported all my life," Godric said.
"These are exciting times for Cambridge and, as one of its largest and most important civic institutions, we want Cambridge United to play an even bigger winning role in its future on and off the pitch."
After starting his career in mental health campaigning, Godric spent 15 years in Government communications, including 10 years in Downing Street as the Prime Minister's official spokesman between 2001 and 2004.
He left that role to become communications director for London 2012, as well as chairing the Heads Up campaign - led by the FA - for the 2019-20 season and being awarded a CBE for his work in Government.
Godric will be replaced as chair of the Cambridge United Foundation by Mike Davey,
Both will continue to sit on both Boards.
"I am very proud to be asked to chair the Foundation," Mike said.
"The recent social impact value report of £27 million underlines our reach; there is a widespread recognition that, if the city is to grow sustainably and equitably, it is important there is more opportunity and help for those who need it most."
Mike was a Cambridge United season ticket holder before joining the Board last summer.
The former leader of Cambridge City Council has worked as a director in local government in Cambridge with roles with responsibility for community safety, engagement and working with young people.
He was also chief executive of the Connexions Company in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough which employed over 300 people, delivering services for young people to enable them to get into training or employment.

"His calm and thoughtful leadership has been a key factor in helping move the club forward over recent times, and he hands over with Cambridge United in a very different place to when he first joined.
"Godric is well respected across the city and passionate about the positive role Cambridge United can play in its future.
"Mike is also someone who has deep links in Cambridge; it is great he has agreed to lead this next important chapter for the Foundation."
