Families to wait until early 2027 for report on Addenbrooke's surgeon review
Cambridge University Hospitals says the delay is beyond its control
Families affected by an external clinical review into the practice of a surgeon at Addenbrooke's will not get the final report until early 2027, the hospital trust has said.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said the review's chair, Andrew Kennedy KC, expects to give his report to the trust at the end of 2026.
The trust said it then expects to share the final report with affected patients and families in early 2027, before it is published.
The review is looking at the practice of Ms Kuldeep Stohr.
The trust said it has written to affected patients and families to update them and apologise.
Trust says delay is beyond its control
The trust said in a statement: 'We are sorry this is later than originally expected. We know patients and families have already waited a long time for this report, and we recognise the impact of this further delay. The report is being written independently of the Trust and so the timeline we have been given is unfortunately beyond our control.'
Review still ongoing
The trust said the review is ongoing and the final clinical reviews need to be completed before the report is written.
It said the outcomes also need to be discussed with patients and families.
The trust said this process needs to be given the same time and attention as it was at the beginning of the review.
It said all patients and families should have the same opportunity to understand their findings, ask questions and seek further information.
What happens next
The trust said Mr Kennedy will prepare his report once the remaining reviews and discussions are complete.
After the trust receives it, several steps must be completed before it can be shared with patients and families and then published.
The trust said these include:
Sharing the report with NHS England and the Care Quality Commission
Checking the report for factual accuracy
Making sure patients and families cannot be identified from the information in it
Preparing a plain-language summary through independent experts, as asked for by patients and families
The trust said it will give specific dates for when families will get an advance copy and when the report will be published once it has received the draft.
It said the updated timetable has been discussed with NHS England, the Care Quality Commission and the chair of its Patient Advisory Board.
The trust said it remains committed to giving affected patients and families time to read the report before it is published more widely.
It said it will keep working with the Patient Advisory Board on the timing and approach, including considering school holidays, so information is shared as sensitively as possible.
Further update due in November
The trust said it will give a further update in November on delivery of the action plan published in response to the Verita report.
It said this will also include the latest information on the timetable for Mr Kennedy's report and its publication.
Support for patients and families
The trust said it understands this continues to be an extremely difficult and unsettling time.
It said its Patient and Family Liaison Team remains available to provide information, guidance and support throughout the review.
