Driver jailed after fleeing crash that left passenger with brain injury
Speeding incident in Peterborough results in severe injuries
Nicusor Ionescu, 27, has been sentenced to two years in prison after causing a crash in Peterborough that left another man with a severe brain injury.
On 6th September, Ionescu lost control of his speeding Mercedes on Eastfield Road and collided with a tree, leaving his passenger trapped with serious injuries.
Ionescu fled the scene, only to be pursued and detained by witnesses until police arrived to arrest him.
The passenger, also 27, suffered multiple fractures, was placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks, and is now confined by his fragile mental health and is unable to work.
At Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Andrew Hurst remarked on Ionescu's lack of compassion for the victim, noting his cowardly attempt to evade the scene of the crash.
Convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without insurance or a valid license, Ionescu was jailed following his admission of guilt.
Detective Constable Lauren Byrne expressed sympathy for the victim and his family, noting the extensive impact of the crash on their lives and highlighting the preventable nature of the incident due to Ionescu's reckless driving.
DC Byrne concluded, "The fact Ionescu tried to flee the scene is cowardly and shows his lack of remorse and compassion for the victim."
