Sandbanks Ferry to bring in ANPR from July
Automatic Number Plate Recognition is being introduced for all vehicle crossings - promising a faster and simpler experience
The Sandbanks Ferry is set to implement Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology for all vehicle crossings starting 1st July 2026.
The new system is designed to enhance passenger experience by using ANPR cameras to read Vehicle Registration Marks automatically as cars approach the ferry.
With this advancement, barriers are removed, and vehicles no longer need to stop, facilitating smoother traffic flow.
From 1st July 2026, traditional payment methods, including card payments in person and the Sandbanks Ferry Toll Card (SFTC), will be discontinued.
Passengers must use online platforms for vehicle toll payments, although the cost of crossings remains unchanged.
How to Use the New System
Passengers can make payments online at SandbanksFerry.co.uk/Pay, with three options available: pay after travel, buy tokens in advance, or set up an account for regular users, which offers discounts on bulk purchases.
Existing SFTC account holders should transition to a new ANPR account before their passes expire to ensure continued travel.
Unused passes are automatically converted into ANPR Tokens.
Additionally, paper tickets can be credited onto ANPR accounts at the Ferry Office by 31st March 2027, with assistance available for the transition.
Impact on Traffic and Community
Mike Kean, Chairman of The Sandbanks Ferry, highlighted the importance of the ferry service to the local community and economy.
With peak time congestion causing delays, the new system aims to create free-flowing traffic, improving crossing times and easing local road pressure.
Pedestrians and cyclists will not be affected by these changes, and toll prices stay the same.
Support and Guidance
During the settling-in period, additional staff will assist passengers both onboard and at the Ferry Office.
Full guidance is provided on their website to ensure passengers feel confident with the new system.
The payment website will go live before 1st July 2026, allowing passengers to pre-emptively set up accounts and become familiar with the new system.
