Dorset Police have launched a witness appeal after what they've described as a serious injury collision in Blandford.
It follows what bosses at a local school reported as an 'incident' yesterday (8 May).
Dorset Police received a report at 4.34pm relating to a collision on a field by Blandford Leisure Centre in Milldown Road, involving a white Seat Leon – which was towing a caravan – and a child pedestrian.
Emergency services attended and the child – a three-year-old boy – was taken to Southampton Hospital by air ambulance, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. His family has been informed.
A cordon was put in place to allow the emergency services to respond to the incident and for enquiries at the scene to be carried out.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.
Sergeant Mike Burt, of the Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the young boy who was seriously injured and their family at this time.
“We are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of this incident, and I would urge any witnesses, or anyone with relevant dashcam or other footage, to please get in touch if you have not already contacted police.
“We appreciate an incident such as this involving a young child can have a significant impact on the local community and there will be an increased policing presence in the vicinity as we continue to carry out enquiries and to provide reassurance. Officers can be approached by anyone with any information and concerns.
“We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while we responded to this incident and as we continue to carry out enquiries.”
'Calm, well-organised response'
In a statement sent to us, they told us how they would like to highlight that staff at The Blandford School have been praised by parents for their clear communication and calm, well-organised response.
One parent shared: "I’d just like to praise The Blandford School. Obviously what is going on is stressful for everyone concerned, but they put a statement out last night quickly & clearly & this morning there are loads of teachers out making sure everyone is ok & knows what they’re doing! Well done!"
Another added: "Couldn't agree more, it was so well organised and it shows what a brilliant Head Sally Wilson has been. She will be a great loss when she leaves. It was a great show of how she runs a well organised team at very short notice."
