The closure of a specialist disabled toilet in Bournemouth town centre has prompted concern from campaigners, who warn it risks excluding people from public life.

BCP Council confirmed that the Changing Places facility in Bournemouth Lower Gardens has been shut due to repeated anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

The toilet block, which is normally open daily with seasonal hours, includes a fully equipped Changing Places unit designed for people with complex disabilities. Facilities include a hoist, adult changing bench, space for carers and a centrally positioned toilet.

A council spokesperson said the decision to close the site had not been taken lightly. “This facility has been prone to anti-social behaviour and vandalism, with incidents in recent months causing thousands of pounds worth of damage,” they said.

The authority has removed the previous Radar key system, describing it as no longer suitable, and is now reviewing more secure access arrangements before reopening.

In the meantime, the nearest alternative facility is located at the Marsham Court Hotel, around a nine-minute walk away.

However, disability advocates say the loss of a central facility has a significant impact.

Jenny Miller, chief executive of PAMIS, said: “These facilities are essential, not optional, and without them many disabled people are unable to visit public spaces.

“While we recognise the challenges the council has faced, we urge them to prioritise reopening the toilet as soon as possible and to keep the disabled community informed.”

The council has apologised for the disruption and said updates will be provided as plans for improving security and access progress.
