50 firefighters tackle heath and woodland fire on Hampshire Dorset border

Firefighters are still at the scene of a large heath fire on the Hampshire Dorset border this morning.

Around 50 firefighters tackled the fire in Bransgore the broke out on Saturday night and carried on into Sunday morning.

People living around Burley Road told to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke.

Around one hectare of heathland and woods have been destroyed, it's not yet clear how the fire started.

A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service said:

"Crews from New Milton, Lymington, Fordingbridge, Eastleigh and Beaulieu were first called at 19:35 and are working alongside teams from Dorset and Wiltshire FRS.

"Using water carriers and Land Rovers, firefighters are working to surround and stop the blaze.

"The incident was scaled down overnight but a few fire service vehicles remain on the scene this morning with relief crews working to extinguish hotspots."
