Mental Health Football Club in Wolverhampton is offering more than just football to its players, providing them with crucial mental health support through therapy.

The club, founded by Jonathon (Jon) Law and Paddy O'Shea in 2022, aims to assist those struggling with mental health issues by combining sport with professional help.

Mr Law, who serves as the Chairman, Manager, and Coach, created the club after battling his own mental health challenges and found solace in grassroots football.

"After leaving the armed forces, I was struggling with my mental health and addiction," he said.

"And the only thing that got me out of bed and got me away from it all and gave me a purpose was Sunday league football."

Through its partnership with Hopeless to Focused (H2F), Mental Health FC ensures that players have access to free therapy alongside their participation in the sport.

The club has expanded rapidly since its inception, now boasting 11 teams, including four disability teams, competing across Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Staffordshire.

Mental Health FC is not only a place for players to hone their football skills but also provides a supportive community for tackling mental health stigma.

Mr Law expressed how football has had a huge impact on him, saying: "It’s saved my life basically. My relationship and everything was all on the rocks, but football got me through."

For those looking for advice to combat mental health struggles, Jon encourages finding an release that distracts from the challenges and gives something to look forward to, even if it's only for an hour a day or a week

"Don’t let it defeat you," he said.

"Find that outlet that makes you forget about it – even if it’s just for an hour. No matter what. We’ve got to break the stigma."

Mental Health FC also holds fundraising events to give back to their Wolverhampton community.
