A retired police dog is recovering at home after undergoing spinal surgery funded by charity supporters.

Captain, who served with West Midlands Police, had his career cut short after the physical demands of the job left him with severe damage to his spine.

The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, which supports retired police dogs, announced on Facebook on 15th September that the operation had been successful.

So far, Captain's treatment has cost the charity more than £28,000.

Years of treatment before the operation

Supporters of the Thin Blue Paw Foundation originally raised thousands of pounds so Captain could undergo specialist surgery.

However, vets decided at the time that he was not strong enough for the procedure.

The charity said it then covered two years' worth of hydrotherapy and pain medication for Captain.

In July, specialists decided he was finally ready for the operation.

Captain underwent a five-hour procedure to repair the two most seriously damaged discs in his spine.

The Thin Blue Paw Foundation said he is now home and recovering well.

Handler's gratitude

Captain's owner and former handler, Marcus, said the support of the charity may have saved his life.

"Without the continued support of the Thin Blue Paw Foundation I fear that, due to my own circumstances, Captain may have been put to sleep.

"The Foundation has gone above and beyond for Captain and it shows why they are the best charity supporting our wonderful retired police dogs.

"I will be eternally grateful for the charity and its supporters for giving Captain a second chance at having a happy retirement.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart" Marcus said.
