The West Midlands Fire Service Chief has commended the efforts of his colleagues and partners for their response to fires across the region last week, particularly on August 13th.

"Thursday 13 August will stay with me, and with all of us here at West Midlands Fire Service for a long time."

Simon Tuhill says in the statement they faced unprecedented demand on this day, what is now known as being one of the hottest and driest days of the year.

He says the service received thousands of emergency calls and responded to multiple major incidents across the region, with fire crews facing considerable physical and emotional challenges working tirelessly to control fires and protect communities.

Thanking the WMFS Teams

Tuhill extends thanks to every firefighter and fire control colleague who remained committed despite extreme conditions and exhaustion.

He also acknowledges the vital contributions of incident room staff, those maintaining equipment and vehicles, and those managing logistics and welfare behind the scenes.

Acknowledging Collaborators

In his letter, Tuhill also recognises the essential collaboration with West Midlands Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, neighbouring fire services, council, utility companies, and network partners.

He specifically mentions the help from the British Red Cross, the Rapid Response Team, local farmers, MPs, and many others who provided essential assistance.

Community Appreciation

The Chief Fire Officer passed his gratitude to the various community members who offered support, understanding, and kindness too, amid the chaos.

Acts of goodwill, like offering water to crews, respecting safety cordons, and helping neighbours, played an important role in the service's ability to manage the crisis.

"This was, for many of you, frightening and heartbreaking, and we are extremely conscious of that."

Lessons and Ongoing Impact

Tuhill highlights the significant challenges faced, recognising the emotional toll on both the team members and the communities affected by the fires.

He assures a comprehensive debrief will be conducted to learn from the response, aiming to improve future operations.

While acknowledging the continuing impact of the fires on local residents, Tuhill concludes with a heartfelt appreciation for the collective effort from the service, partners, and communities.

"While this is thank you, we recognise the continuing impact on the residents who have been so severely affected."
