Teenager jailed for life following Birmingham gang-related murder
Oumar Traore sentenced for killing rival gang member Yassin Alama.
An 18-year-old has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 19-year-old Yassin Alama in Birmingham.
Oumar Traore fatally stabbed Yassin Alama on Hutton Road, Handsworth, following a dispute between rival street gangs in November last year.
Traore, who was 17 at the time, fled the scene and was later arrested at an address in Birmingham where police found several large knives, one with his fingerprints.
Despite claiming self-defence, Traore was found guilty of murder by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court in June this year.
Today, 23rd October, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years before possible release. He also received a 20-month sentence for possession of an offensive weapon, to be served concurrently.
Mustafa Ali, who drove Traore from the scene and disposed of evidence, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender and will be sentenced at a future date. Oliver Gabbis, who helped Traore evade police, was sentenced earlier this year.
Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell highlighted the severe impact of gang violence and expressed hope that the sentence brings some comfort to Yassin’s family.
