Section 60 stop and search powers are being implemented in Birmingham city centre, Sparkbrook, and Soho Road from 5pm today.

These measures, which allow officers to stop and search individuals without the need for reasonable suspicion, will remain effective until 1am tomorrow in Soho Road and Sparkbrook, and until 3am in the city centre.

Police acknowledge the concerns communities may have regarding the use of stop and search powers but emphasize their necessity to address knife crime and certain other offences, particularly as darker nights settle in.

Today and throughout the weekend, officers will be conducting high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols, working with various units including firearms officers, and dog and drone units to ensure public safety.

The ongoing Project Guardian operation further enhances these efforts with weapon sweeps, retailer checks, and strategic enforcement combined with educational outreach, especially targeted at young people.

Local residents, parents, and guardians are encouraged to report any suspicions or concerns about knife crime in their area using the 101 line, Live Chat on the police website, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555111. In emergencies, dial 999.
