Police have extra powers in Walsall until mid morning today (8 Jan) after violence broke out in the area.

Section 60 powers mean officers can stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. The powers came into affect last night and will be in place until 10am today.

Inspector Phil Upton, of Walsall LPA, said: “We don’t use section 60 powers lightly, but we will use all our powers to ensure the safety of people in the area.”

Extra patrols will be in the area over the coming days to offer reassurance to the community.
