Police dog Snow is celebrating his ninth birthday as he prepares to retire after an eight-year career packed with arrests, bravery and commendations.

Part of the force’s ‘Game of Thrones’ litter, Snow has helped officers catch numerous offenders, from a rape suspect who tried to flee his home to three people linked to a burglary in Walsall.

He has also been involved in some of the force’s most dangerous incidents, including helping detain an armed man and protecting his handler, PC Johnson, after he was assaulted during a stop and search.

Snow received a Commander’s Award for his role in detaining a man who set fire to several cars and a pub, as well as a Chief Constable’s Commendation for his work during an armed incident.

He was also involved in the recent bulldozer incident in Wolverhampton.

After eight years of loyal service, Snow’s ‘watch is ending’ – and the much-loved police dog can now enjoy a well-earned retirement.

PC Duncan Johnson and Snow

PC Duncan Johnson from the Dog Unit said: “Snow has never let me down. If he tells me the offender is there, they will be there. I will always trust his instinct.

“We have been so lucky to have a police dog like Snow. He has been a credit to the force and I’m so proud to have been his handler.

“I’m thrilled that he has been recognised nationally for his incredible career. He deserves to win.

“He’s been the most perfect police dog and leaves some big paws to fill.”
