The world premiere of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man took place in Birmingham last night. Fans and cast gathered in the city that inspired the series.

I spoke to creator Steven Knight ahead of the screening. “It’s where I’m from and when you’re a writer, you use whatever you’ve got in your head, in your memory, in your experience. Birmingham was a big part of that,” he said.

Knight insisted the film be shot locally. “The production team were astonished at what they found here. Incredible locations, incredible cooperation. And we’re shooting locations that have never been shot before. So it’s all fresh, which is fantastic.”

We also spoke about the show’s impact on fans. “Parents and kids watch it together and they often say it’s the only show they actually watch together because their kids like it and they like it. That’s what you do this job for,” Knight told us.

Attention also turned to a Peaky Blinders-themed West Midlands Metro tram. Knight said he had shared a photo with Cillian Murphy ahead of the actor’s arrival. “Stuff doesn’t normally get done in Brum… but the cast are really looking forward to it because it’s something different,” he said.

On seeing the film with an audience, Knight added: “I can’t wait. I’ve seen it a million times, but to see it with people who’ve never seen it before… people who are just there to see a film, I can’t wait because I think they’re going to love it.”
