A 76-year-old man accused of shooting dead a taxi driver in 2008 will face trial in November after a crown court hearing which went ahead in his absence.

David Harrison, who is being held at HMP Frankland in County Durham, chose not to appear by prison video-link for a plea hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday.

Harrison, from Bilston, West Midlands, was charged by police with murder in December last year, in connection with the death of 39-year-old Harun Khan on March 3 2008.

Father-of-four Mr Khan was shot outside his home in Tudor Street in Tipton, near Dudley, at 9.25pm and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Harrison is also charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a shooting of a 27-year-old man on December 14 2007 in Farthings Lane, Dudley, and two counts of possessing a firearm.

Judge Michael Chambers KC adjourned Harrison's case for a trial to begin on November 16 with a time estimate of three weeks.

The judge told prosecution counsel Michael Burrows KC and defence barrister Michael Duck KC that a further trial preparation hearing will take place on April 10.

The judge said of Harrison's absence from the hearing: "The simple course is that a not guilty plea be entered but given the seriousness of the case I think I ought to give the defence an opportunity to try and see Mr Harrison.

"The case stands adjourned and the defendant remains in custody in relation to this matter."
