More than 20 vehicles were stopped by officers on Tuesday (27 January), during a multi-agency road safety operation in Wolverhampton, as part of a national enforcement campaign focusing on light commercial vehicles.

The local neighbourhood officers joined the force's Road Harm Prevention Team for the operation based off Springvale Way in Bilston and were working alongside partners, including the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) and Wolverhampton Council's licensing officers.

• Traffic officers stopped 24 vehicles they suspected of being dangerous or being driven illegally, including 10 vans and small lorries.

• Eight of the vehicles were seized for a variety of offences, including having no valid tax and one driver was arrested for driving while disqualified.

• One driver was arrested after an offensive weapon, a friction-lock baton, was recovered from the footwell of the vehicle that had no insurance and was towing a trailer with another car on the back.

• Some 13 drivers were also given traffic tickets, with the most common issues picked up during the checks being drivers using their mobile phones, people not wearing seatbelts, cars with windows that are too dark to see through, vehicles carrying too much weight, and drivers who are banned from driving, or driving untaxed or uninsured vehicles.

West Midlands Police says it carries out road safety operations like this regularly across Wolverhampton and the West Midlands and they are all about preventing collisions and saving lives because unsafe vehicles and careless driving can lead to serious injuries or worse.
