Drivers in the Midlands are being urged to prepare their vehicles ahead of the Easter holiday, as new figures show spring breakdowns on England’s motorways and major A-roads have risen 25.6% since 2022.

National Highways recorded 71,254 breakdowns between March and May 2025, compared with 56,702 in 2022. A survey of UK drivers reveals that 51% of people in the Midlands have broken down on a major road at some point, and nearly three in ten believe the incident could have been prevented with simple vehicle checks.

Colin Stevenson, Road Safety Information Lead at National Highways, said: “A few simple checks can help prevent many of the breakdowns we see each year. With millions expected on the roads over Easter, these small steps can save time, stress and money.”

The survey also highlights the emotional and financial impact of breakdowns. Drivers reported feeling stressed (42%), anxious (34%) and frustrated (34%), while typical recovery costs for those without cover can reach £229 for roadside assistance, £257 for towing, and £346 for onward travel.

To help drivers stay safe, National Highways is promoting its T.R.I.P. guidance:

Top-up: Fuel, oil, screenwash and electric charge.

Rest: Take a minimum 15-minute break every two hours and get a good night’s sleep before travelling.

Inspect: Check tyre pressure and tread, and look for obvious vehicle issues.

Prepare: Plan your route, check the weather, and pack essentials for delays.

Over the Easter bank holiday (Thursday 2 April to Monday 6 April), National Highways will lift 1,500 miles of roadworks to help ease congestion and keep 98% of major routes clear, supporting tourism, freight, and local businesses.

National Highways advises drivers to take a few simple steps before setting off to reduce breakdowns, delays, and the emotional strain of being stranded on a major road.
