A 43-year-old man has been jailed after attacking a 72-year-old in Birmingham with a knife.

Craig Holden assaulted the man as he was walking along Russell Road in Moseley at around 1pm on 20th June last year. Holden snatched the man’s bag from his shoulder, pushed him into a wall, and lunged at him several times with a knife.

The victim sustained multiple injuries but avoided worse harm thanks to his quick reactions, jumping out of the way. Holden slashed his arm and stole the bag, which contained a mobile phone, credit cards, and cash.

Two days later, Holden was identified and arrested following a police investigation. He was charged with offences including robbery, wounding with intent, possession of a knife, and burglary.

Holden pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday at Birmingham Crown Court. He must serve a minimum of six years and five months before he is eligible for parole.

PC Wainwright from Birmingham Police described the attack as “violent” and said the victim avoided worse injury thanks to his quick reactions.

“Holden has shown no remorse and will rightfully be spending time behind bars,” PC Wainwright added.
